"NINE MUSES IN BOREAS' WOOD" STORY
The Boreal Forest is the home of Boreas, Greek God of the Northwind, The muses, daughters of Zeus, now wrapped in fin, fur, and feathers, remain the artist's guardians, tyrants, and inspiration.
Terpsichore--Muse of Dance, wrapped herself in fur and became Bear. Clio--"the teller", Muse of History, became Owl. Kalliope--Epic Poet of grand heroic sweep, became Orca, the "Killer Whale". Melpomene--daughter of Tragedy, "the Singing One", became Wolf. Urania--"the Heavenly One", was Eagle. Euterpe--Muse of Music, daughter of charm and harmony became Beaver. Thalia--"Blossom"--flourishing with humor, the Muse of Comedy, became Otter. Erato--Muse of Love, chose Frog; and Polyhymnia--Sacred Poet and Mime, wore the feathers of Raven--creator, transformer and trickster of northern myth.
Nine Muses in Boreas' Wood takes the shape of a tree in deadfall. The roots intertwine around the man working in their shadow. The Haida carver who came to the Boreal Forest to carve his story seeks and listens to the voices in the tree. Thirty faces--generations past, present and yet to be born, peer from the knots and gnarls of the woody bole and roots of mankind's family tree. Cloaked within the fiber of the roots, the nine muses guard, guide and follow his labor of finding them again in the old trunk. Each played her part in the meaning of his life and the tracing of his days.

Frog--"He tires, Melpomene."
Wolf--"He could not be spared. He has been tasting our tears and sweat and laughter for days..."
Bear--"...but has felt our presence and heard our voices since the start of his task."
Owl--"It is almost complete; we knew the working of it would drain his strength. That is why we are here with him."
Otter--"He's so serious and the work so slow."
Beaver--"Take heart, dear Thalia. Care must be taken and we have the time. Joy will come with completion."
Orca--"We have hovered and guided and upheld him with the sweep of our presence for this long. Patience, my sisters, it will all be told
Eagle--"Told and retold, Kalliope, until man cannot forget what has been done."
Raven--"Man has always been apt to hear and not listen. He strives to forget debts rather than to remember...."
Owl--"Hush...he is speaking."
Carver--"It is almost finished and yet these voices around me seem to press closer. I feel their breath on my bare skin and soul. At times I have felt their sweat mingle with my own, the saltiness of their inspiration bringing tears and laughter. So, am I Artist or Tool? Servant used to free this story from the tree; tool wielded by stronger hands and greater minds than my own? You Whisperers on the wind, hearken now, hear the totems echo your tale."

Totem--"In the beginning of our world there was a man crowned with rings of honor and Bear held him in her arms and danced for joy as life began. Owl came and the daily ordering of his life was hers to fashion and trace. On the foamy crests of these days, heroic Orca reveled in the tides of men...boasting in moments of grandeur and glory.
Much was good...yet man, great and rich, forgot the one who gifted him also served--and in forgetting, muzzled the Wind's whisper and muted the cry of his own soul.
Into this vulnerable silence came the tragic song of Wolf. Clinging to and marring the symmetry of Orca's tail, she held the sweep of history hostage.
Life was no longer in balance and man was upside down with a debt he could not pay, his face lost in the suffering of a universe.
Wolf sang a paean of dispossession and bereavement up into the heavens and Eagle, hearing mankind's' plight, returned. The one who wore more rings of honor than any other chose again to serve and cover--bearing the debt, giving again the gift that was forgotten, and restoring to man the unearned blessings of Beaver, Otter, and Frog.
Man and universe are healed. Once again they are complete and beautiful as they were meant to be from the beginning, In this blossoming of humor, harmony and love, the voice of Raven is heard again--and three who are crowned keep watch.
